Diarrhea and constipation are without a doubt  the most common, yet persistent ailments that we face. Both stomach problems can put you flat on your back for hours or even days. Knowing how to treat these digestive ailments can be a lifesaver, especially since these stomach problems can result in severe dehydration and electrolyte loss over the course of several days. Here are some basic things to consider when treating diarrhea and constipation.

Treating Diarrhea

– Remember that diarrhea is often caused by changes to our daily routine. Stress, excitement, and anything out of the ordinary can bring on a severe case of diarrhea. Diarrhea is sometimes caused by bacteria or other sicknesses and as stated before, can also be caused by certain foods that are not cooked properly or are in general very difficult to digest.

– Most cases of diarrhea can actually be treated simply by using the bathroom. Simple though it may seem, this is the first thing you should try when faced with diarrhea.

– Treat diarrhea by using any number of over-the-counter medications. This particular sickness is one of the few ailments that responds well to over-the-counter medicines. Check with your pharmacist for options to try.

– While dealing with a severe case of diarrhea, it is a very good idea to replace fluids by drinking the electrolyte heavy Pedialyte for children (it is fine for adults too, of course) instead of sports drinks, make your own electrolyte solution (for adults) or bottled water. Do not attempt to replace fluids by drinking tap water, soft drinks, or any sugary liquids. Also avoid all dairy products.

– Be sure to eat lightly while fighting diarrhea. Avoid any hot or spicy foods, and eat very small portions more often. You do not want to overload your stomach for obvious reasons.

– Stick to easily digestible food while the diarrhea remains. Good foods to eat include crackers, breads, light but filling soups, and any other foods that break down easily in your digestive system.
