Drinking alcoholic beverages is a bad habit especially when done in excess. There may not be anything wrong with having a few drinks now and then but unfortunately most people can’t stop with a few. They continue to drink until it is all gone or they can no longer stand up properly.

Is everyone who drinks to excess an alcoholic? Most experts would say no. But it is a form of alcohol abuse. People who drink to excess are obnoxious because they don’t know when enough is enough. They lack simple self-restraint. Many people lack self-control whether their vice is drinking, smoking, eating or a drug problem. They simply don’t know how to say no to the next drink.

People who drink alcohol excessively don’t realize how their actions and behavior affects those around them. People who drink too much tend to suffer from mood swings. They may have violent outbursts or periods of depression. People who drink too much alcohol also tend to get loud and overbearing. They even tend to get paranoid and swear that everyone is talking about them. They may want to talk all night and keep you awake. Others will want to walk down memory lane and cry on your shoulder. Then there are those who get aggressive and want to pick a fight with everyone and anyone for no reason whatsoever.

Everyone reacts differently when they have too much to drink. Too much alcohol produces the silly, absurd and ridiculous. Dealing with someone who drinks too much too often requires quite a bit of patience. When you try to tell someone they’ve had enough to drink they usually get defensive. They may refer to themselves as casual drinkers. Someone who drinks socially usually only drinks at social functions. Those who are casual drinkers may drink more often but usually have the restraint to stop after a couple of drinks. People who lack the self-control to stop drinking and continue to drink until the well has run dry are on a destructive path. They are alcohol abusers and may well be on their way to suffering from alcoholism.

All of the previously mentioned factors combine to make a person who drinks too much obnoxious. If someone you love is an obnoxious drinker urge them to seek help. Let the person know where you stand. Tell him/her how you feel. Don’t try to talk to the person while he/she is drinking. Wait until he/she is sober to have the conversation. Reaffirm that you love the person not the behavior. If the individual is abusive in any way or just in denial seek help for yourself and weigh your options. You don’t have to deal with an obnoxious drinker.
